Hey, Alaska Urban Hippie here, Ashley, and uh I feel like there are a lot of videos on the internet that talk about how cute chickens are and how fun it is the have chickens and even though all of that is very true but something most people don’t talk about is one of the big downsides, which is having chicken poop everywhere. So today I’m going around the yard and I’m picking up chicken poop. So I just use the same scooper you would use if you had a dog. And it’s not hard to do. Chicken poop, if you have healthy chickens, stays together. It doesn’t come out soft. It should come out pretty well formed. But it just gets everywhere. Chickens aren’t like dogs, where they’ll pick one spot in the yard and go there every time. If you have chickens free ranging around your yard, you’re going to have chicken poop all around your yard. And if your chickens really like you, and you have some sort of patio area that they have access to, you’re going to get chicken poop all over your patio area, too. So I just wanted to mention that because it’s one of the big downsides about having chickens that most people don’t think about. Just having chicken poop everywhere. And then when you’re in your yard, you have to wear giant poop boots. Or just somewhere where if you step in poop, it’s just not a big deal if you step in chicken poop. These are actually my husband’s boots. Shhh. I wear his boots as poop boots. Chickens are great. They’re really fun. I mean, they’re great recyclers. I give them my old leftover food, they give me eggs. They love just running around the yard and eating grass. But the one thing that people don’t really talk about is just having poop everywhere. If you’re somebody who lets your chickens free range around the yard. And even right now…so this is our patio area… And I just scooped it, but the chickens will hang out here and just poop. So on occasion I’ll have to pick up poop from here then spray it down with the hose. And over here, now they’re just hanging out on the side of the house. I already poop scooped over here. But I’m just trying to have a very real honest moment with you. If you’re thinking about getting chickens, that’s something you need to think about. Poop management. You know, if you have little kids, and you want your kids to be running around and playing in the yard, you’ll have to think about either keeping the chickens inside of their run or I guess just being really on top of poop scooping your yard. It’s doable. It’s not like if you have free ranging chickens you can’t clean up after them. You definitely can clean up after it it’s just something you have to be aware of, just like having a dog or anything else. Alright. Well I’m going to get back to scooping up the yard. And I guess the one nice thing about having a bucket full of chicken poop is that I can throw it straight into my compost. Dog poop you don’t really want to compost, because it can carry ecoli but chicken poop is just great fertilizer. Alright, something to think about. Definitely, I don’t mind doing it, especially if it’s a nice day out. But it’s something to think about. Chickens are a lot of work sometimes. Alright, thanks for watching!
