Subtitles available in the parameters Red mites have significant impacts on laying hens worldwide. The production losses are estimated to be around 130 million euros per year for the European egg industry, for example. Some essential oils have repellent properties against arthropods. Nor-Feed created the first repellent index
to evaluate the repellent effect of volatile plant compounds. We used a test tube to evaluate the repellent properties of: Eugenol, Linalol And Eucalyptol. The test tube was divided in two zones: the organic volatile compounds zone and the neutral zone. Red mites were randomly kept in the test tubes for 3 hours. The tubes were frozen to block the red mite’s movements and observe their repartition in the tube. Each compound was compared to a control. A repellent index was calculated for each
compound. The following chart shows that the 3 compounds have a repellent effect on red mites. We observe that eugenol was the most repellent compound against poultry red mites. As we saw, all the actives do not have the
same repellent effect. Nor-Mite, our natural repellent, was designed thanks to this Repellent Index to use the most effective compounds and provide an efficient repellent effect.
