There have been many false rumours that the novel coronavirus can be spread by eating chicken. India’s poultry sales dropped by 50%, due to people avoiding chicken. BS Yadav, Managing Director, Godrej Agrovet Ltd on 27 February 2020 said that, the sales have fallen from 75 million birds a week to 40 million birds. This is all due to the scare of the virus. From the previous ₹80-85 per bird, the chickens are now being sold for ₹30-35 causing a major loss. Some farmers have started to reduce production as they cannot afford animal feed. Across the world, apart from China, the death toll from the coronavirus crossed 2,800, and the number of infections reached above 83,000. In China, 2,788 people have died from the virus and nearly 79,000 infected. Yadav said that “A lot of misleading posts on social media, especially on WhatsApp, have created a false impression about chicken being unsafe. These are totally fake. The virus does not spread through chicken and they are just rumours. Similarly, there are many such rumours spreading on WhatsApp. There are rumours about boycotting ordering things from China as it could spread the virus. This is completely false. The coronaviruses do not survive long on objects as the delivery takes a long time. Only close contact to a Chinese who is infected can cause the infection. Another rumour was that eating garlic can cure Coronavirus. Garlic has many health benefits but it is not proven to cure Coronavirus. When you come across any messages about the virus please make sure to double check on google, with doctors or news papers and then believe it. Otherwise ignore it.
