Local authorities are on high alert after
they detected a strain of avian influenza on Saturday at a poultry farm in Korea’s southwestern
city of Gochang in Jeollabuk-do Province. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs says the H5 strain of the bird flu was discovered… before some of the farm’s
ten-thousand ducks were slaughtered. In response, Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon has
called on related agencies to be on alert and carry out contingency measures in case
of an outbreak. Test results to determine if the strain is
highly pathogenic will be unveiled as early as Sunday.
